چکیده

This paper advances newmethods for ecosystemic approaches to evolutionary music and art. We explore the biological concept of the niche and its role in evolutionary dynamics, applying it to creative computational systems. Using the process of niche construction organisms are able to change and adapt their environment, and potentially that of other species. Constructed niches may become heritable environments for offspring, paralleling the way genes are passed from parent to child. In a creative ecosystem, niche construction can be used by agents to increase the diversity and heterogeneity of their output. We illustrate the usefulness of this technique by applying niche construction to line drawing and music composition.

Evolutionary consequences of niche construction and their implications for ecology.

Organisms regularly modify local resource distributions, influencing both their ecosystems and the evolution of traits whose fitness depends on such alterable sources of natural selection in environments. We call these processes niche construction. We explore the evolutionary consequences of niche construction using a two-locus population genetic model, which extends earlier analyses by allowin...

Niche Construction and the Behavioral Context of Plant and Animal Domestication

Many animal species attempt to enhance their environments through niche construction or environmental engineering. Such efforts at environmental modification are proposed to play an important and underappreciated role in shaping biotic communities and evolutionary processes. Homo sapiens is acknowledged as the ultimate niche constructing species in terms of our rich repertoire of ecosystem engi...

THE NICHE CONSTRUCTION PERSPECTIVE: Implications for evolution and human behaviour

The vibrancy of the field of evolution and human behaviour belies the fact that the majority of social scientists are deeply unhappy with evolutionary accounts of human behaviour. In part, this reflects a problem within evolutionary biology: neo-Darwinism fails to recognize a fundamental cause of evolutionary change, “niche construction”, by which organisms modify environmental states, and cons...

Niche Markets

T his book, the latest in the excellent Monographs in Population Biology series from Princeton University Press, is a work of advocacy in which the authors argue that evolutionary theory is incomplete and that, in consequence, we are failing fully to understand phenomena as disparate as ecosystem development and the interplay of genes and culture in shaping human evolution. What we are missing,...

Ecological and evolutionary consequences of niche construction for its agent.

Niche construction can generate ecological and evolutionary feedbacks that have been underinvestigated so far. We present an eco-evolutionary model that incorporates the process of niche construction to reveal its effects on the ecology and evolution of the niche-constructing agent. We consider a simple plant-soil nutrient ecosystem in which plants have the ability to increase the input of inor...
